Primeval Titan was being played in every green deck and was searching up lands that made games get big real fast. GSZ is essentially an extra [Elvish Mystic] because it can fetch [Dryad Arbor] on turn 1. I'm not 100% sure but I think it's because Green Sun's Zenith is so darn flexible and cheap. Need to lock down control? Chord is good, but it's not nearly as powerful and flexible as GSZ. That being said if modern continues to get faster and more degenerate as cards enter the format green Sun zenith could come off eventually 10 months ago. You can tutor up Pridemage or Trygon Predator when you need to hate on Artifacts or Enchantments, you can tutor up Gaddock Teeg to hate on the control decks, you can tutor up Deathrite or Birds in the early game to accelerate, and you can tutor Tarmogoyf to win you the game. But that's banned in Modern! I think you're underestimating how good elvish mystic that can also be whatever else you want it to be is. The interaction with Dryad Arbor isn't broken by any means, and I hope we can all agree on that. Overall, its a dangerous card. Basically, Duke believes that when the most popular deck in an environment is also among the most winning decks with a win rate significantly above 50% over a long period of time, we investigate. The reason Green is my favorite color is because of the utility it provides, but that is exactly why Green Sun's Zenith has to be banned. It also had the benefit of easing the restrictive mana cost of certain creatures (ie. It's a llanowar elves (turn 1, fetch dryad arbor) that can be used as a tutor. If one wants to more access to utility green creatures, Green Sun's Zenith is a great choice. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. Close. I believe the reasoning for Green Sun's Zenith being banned has been obsolete for quite some time now. Because GSZ allowed you to play 5 copies of your silver bullet green creatures, while being fairly splashable and generally too efficient. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. The redundancy was ridiculous (and fun!). Does anyone feel unbanning GSZ would truly be a bad move? I was looking at taking the deck into a Modern tournament, but I recently found out that Green Sun's Zenith is banned in Modern. GSZ is incredibly good. This is the response that you will probably get after being asked what deck you are playing at FNM this week. Sure, it could be annoying having to play against a deck with effectively 8 Deathrite Shamans, but 4 of them would cost 2 mana. A diverse community of players devoted to Magic: the Gathering, a trading card game ("TCG") produced by Wizards of the Coast and originally designed by Richard Garfield. How did they use/abuse the card? What was the Magic community's reaction when it was banned? get a Deathrite to start putting pressure and accelerate you. Deathrite Shaman was banned for very similar reasons where Grixis Delver was showing a 55% (non-mirror-match) win rate against the field. Here's the original DCI announcement. Cool, you functionally played llanowar elf. Archived. The DCI hopes that banning Green Sun's Zenith increases diversity among Modern green decks. Maverick as we know it today made it’s debut in the Legacy meta game in early 2011 with the release of Mirrodin Besieged and the printing of Green Sun’s Zenith. Fairly new modern player here, so if it enables some boogeyman combo that I don't know about feel free to educate me. The interaction with Dryad Arbor isn't broken by any means, and I hope we can all agree on that. Do you think its a safe buy these days? It's because it would theoretically homogenize all green decks. It’s finally time for another banlist testing report. Does it make Titan decks too strong or something? It is 4x more of your best creature at every point on your curve. Im interested in getting a playset of chord of calling, but i dont want to waste money buying it if gsz is going to be legal in modern. See this link for more on it. GSZ is a turn 1, 2, whenever you need. Almost every green deck. Might as well go right to Wizard's explanation, when they banned it. Posted by. The card made green too efficient aparently. . I was looking at taking the deck into a Modern tournament, but I recently found out that Green Sun's Zenith is banned in Modern. u/josleezy23. In reference to the September 20, 2011 Banned and Restricted Announcement.. Modern. Playing elves, there are a lot of times I'd rather pay four for GSZ than CoCo, and this is true of most other CoCo decks too. Since it recycles itself back into your deck you get a better chance of casting a second one compared to Chord of Calling and this time since you used the first one to make a mana dork you can find a creature faster on than normal. Elvish mystic isn't fantastic by itself(at least not banworthy) but when it also curves you out perfectly any time you have it, that's pretty damn good. One of them was a post deck, but cloudpost got banned in the same round as zenith, so obviously that deck didn't survive. . Chord is in almost every respect a better spell (or so it seems with convoke + instant speed + no colour restriction). Pay 2 and grab a Qasali Pridemage. Back in May, readers chose Green Sun’s Zenith as the next banned card to test, which I’ll just call GSZ from here on out. It's just that GSZ being banned in a format where Chord is allowed is weird. I built myself an awesome R/G mana ramp deck for Christmas, and I'm very content with it. I can't Chord or Pod until turn 3 or 4. I think people really overstate how good using GSZ for 0 to 'ramp' is. Now your GSZ's are a mana dork on turn 1, and a (insert green card here) on turn X. GSZ's mana cost and flexibility makes it far, far more powerful. Plus, imagine how scary a deck with GSZ and Chord would be. That is exactly why I'm always afraid to face it . The other was a zoo deck, which did survive, so much so that a later round had to ban wild nacatl. Basically, like what Twin did with UR decks, all green decks would play GSZ. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Because GSZ can only hit green creatures, chord decks would likely homogenize to playing mostly(only) green creatures. Well, if it was just gw/x toolbox decks running green Sun zenith i think it would be ok to unban. By turn 2-4, it's just an extremely efficient tutor for silver bullets. While this is interesting, it is also too efficient. 0. I can't speak to how good it was in non-zoo decks. On the same story that Green Sun's Zenith was banned in Modern. GSZ actually has less flexibility than chord... New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, More posts from the ModernMagic community. You also might want to bring your opponent a book of Sudoku games to do during the match. I absolutely love having GSZ in my deck, but I'll have to take it out if I wish to compete in the future. The format has changed a lot since. Imagine playing against 8 goyfs, where 4 of those goyfs can also be devistating hate creatures. FWIW: I don't want to face a Titan Shift deck with access to GSZ in Modern. If one wants to more reliably get a large green creature, such as a Primeval Titan, onto the battlefield, Green Sun's Zenith is a great choice. Look at a deck like Melira Pod. For instance, if I look at the pro tour right before this banning, two decks played it in the top 8. Chord is in almost every respect a better spell (or so it seems with convoke + instant speed + no colour restriction). The only deck that got hit really hard was probably the elf combo deck, which was already pretty fringe without glimpse. I found a card that is currently rumored in my FNM location that the card in the subject "may" be banned. It costs 2 more mana. I’ve spent the intervening months grinding games and recording results to test its effect on Modern. A subreddit dedicated to the discussion of Magic: The Gathering's Modern format! Looks like you're using new Reddit on an old browser. I've won every game I've played against my friends so far, and it feels good to stand a chance against my peers' overpowered decks. Banned for being super flexible; you could run 4 extra copies of Dryad Arbor, Wild Nacatl, Qasali Pridemage and any SB green creature. Need a win condition: three mana Tarmogoyf or Scavenging Ooze. I just found it Plus, imagine how scary a deck with GSZ and Chord would be. Having access to Chord of Calling and Birthing Pod allows it to tutor up whatever utility creatures it needs to deal with any situation.
